Adopting a rescued animal from

The Green Valley Brittany

Did you know that shelters and rescues always have a great selection of animals looking for new homes? You can find cats, dogs, birds, small animals, horses, livestock and reptiles.

In fact, any type of animal available for sale at your local pet shop or from a breeder or online is probably waiting for adoption in a nearby shelter or rescue.

Anyone can rehome a rescued animal from us - what's important is matching you, and your family, with the right animal, which will be based on their needs, and yours. Good matches ensure that that you and they can have a fantastic life together.

Before offering to adopt an animal please consider the following:

  • The first question to answer is will the animal be fit for your household?

  • Do you have enough time to devote to the daily needs of e.g. a dog/horse/donkey?

  • Is there someone in your household who is allergic?

  • Can you afford a new animal?

Here are some of the aspects that also need to be considered before finding a good match:

Rehoming a rescued dog :

Some of our dogs, for example, may still need help with toilet training and learn to be left alone, so need to be matched with someone who has the time for this.

Others may not be used to living with children - therefore we may choose not to rehome them to a young family.

Rehoming a rescued cat:

In some cases the cats in our care are still getting used to human company and may need someone who will to be patient with them.

Others may need to be kept indoors - this may mean that they'd be ideal for a family with no outside space.

Rehoming a larger animal e.g. horse or donkey:

Is there enough land, grass, shelter and water available?

Will the animal have a suitable companion ?

Does the potential adopter have experience of such animals and is aware of the need for vaccinations, hoof and dental care, worming etc?

Some animals will have specific needs or long- term medication, which the Green Valley Brittany’s (TGVB) vet can advise on.

Adoption Fees

All animals offered for adoption will have an adoption fee, which varies with type, age and health of the animal. The fee covers in part TGVB’s costs e.g. transport required in the rescue, veterinary fees including e.g. de-worming, de-fleaing, microchipping, sterilisation, food, medication and grooming.

Larger animals may require hoof trimming and dental work. There may be additional transport costs incurred before the animal is rehomed.

Here are the standard adoption fees you will be required to pay for dogs:

  • Puppies from 8 weeks and up to the 6 month: €220 unless agreed differently

  • Dogs over 6 month and up to 8 years: €260 unless agreed differently

  • Dogs over 8 and up to 12 years: €80 unless agreed differently

  • Dogs above 12: a donation is welcome

  • Pure Breed Dogs up to the age of 8 years: €300

The agreed adoption fee will be included in the Adoption Contract, and is due on signing the contract.

The animal will not be handed over until both are completed.

If a fosterer wishes to adopt the foster animal, the adoption process and fee will be tailored.

Home Checks

Once you have done your homework and offered to adopt an animal, one of TGVB’s adoption support volunteers will arrange to visit you and your family at home. They will need to see the home and outside environment (where applicable) where the animal is to be kept. They will discuss with you any specific needs that the animal has, and suggest any adjustments to your house, garden/land or lifestyle that may be needed to help you and your rescue animal settle into a safe, secure and happy life together.

Adoption Contract

You will be required to sign an Adoption Contract before the animal is handed over to you (unless there are exceptional circumstances for the animal’s welfare benefit). Please make sure you have read the guidelines and the contract thoroughly beforehand.

Please fill in the adoption application below and we get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you.
